Bulgaria is a Southeast European parliamentary republic occupying a strategic position on the eastern Balkans, fronting the Black Sea and bordering Turkey, Greece, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Romania. As a member of both the European Union (since 2007) and NATO, it is firmly anchored in Western institutions, though it retains deep historical, cultural, and energy ties to Russia that create recurring domestic and policy tensions. Domestic politics have been marked by repeated instability and frequent elections in recent years, with debates over corruption, judicial reform, and the country's geopolitical orientation forming key fault lines. A long-running bilateral dispute with North Macedonia over history and identity has at times complicated regional EU enlargement.
