Finland formally stands up NATO Forward Land Forces; Sweden commits battlegroup
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen announced the formal creation of NATO Forward Land Forces (FLF Finland), with a Swedish battalion battlegroup of roughly 600 troops based in Boden and a multinational headquarters in Rovaniemi placed under SACEUR General Alexus Grynkewich; the UK, France, Italy, Denmark and Iceland are also contributing, with the force eventually scaling to brigade size. Finland's National Bureau of Investigation concluded its pre-trial probe into the vessel Fitburg, suspected of severing two Tallinn–Helsinki telecom cables in December 2025, referring the case to prosecutors with four crew members still suspects. Finland also joined 11 Schengen states urging the European Commission to tighten or halt tourist visas for Russians. Separately, Microsoft revealed plans for major land purchases and a data centre in the Vaasa region.

Finland's 2023 NATO accession transformed the alliance's northeastern flank, more than doubling NATO's land border with Russia, and the stand-up of a permanent multinational forward force institutionalizes deterrence in the High North. The Baltic Sea cable-sabotage cases—part of a string of incidents since 2023 blamed on Russia's shadow fleet—and the push to curb Russian visas show Helsinki hardening its posture toward Moscow across military, infrastructure and migration fronts.
