Fiji

Fiji is an archipelagic nation in Melanesia and is widely regarded as a hub of the South Pacific, hosting many regional institutions including the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat. It operates as a parliamentary republic with a largely ceremonial president (Wiliame Katonivere) and an executive prime minister (Sitiveni Rabuka of the People's Alliance), whose 2022 return to power followed a long period dominated by figures from earlier coups. A persistent fault line is the relationship between Indigenous iTaukei Fijians and the Indo-Fijian community, a tension that has fueled multiple past coups. Externally, Fiji balances traditional ties to Australia, New Zealand and Western partners against deepening engagement with China, making it a focal point of strategic competition in the Pacific.
