Mauritania rescues boat of 193 migrants from Banjul, mostly Gambians; one woman dead

Mauritania's coast guard rescued a vessel carrying 193 irregular migrants off Nouakchott on Saturday, including 184 Gambians, with one woman found dead and a man hospitalized. The boat had departed from Gambia's capital Banjul, underscoring the country's continued role as a launch point on the perilous West Africa-to-Atlantic migration route. Separately, a US federal court struck down Trump-era immigration restrictions affecting 39 countries — a list that has previously included Gambia. Gambia was also cited among the small group of African states (alongside Rwanda, Ghana, Benin, Seychelles and Togo) that have abolished visas for all African passport holders.

Why it matters

The Atlantic route from Gambia and Senegal toward Mauritania and onward to the Canary Islands has become one of the deadliest migration corridors in recent years, driven by economic hardship and limited legal pathways for Gambian youth. With 184 of the 193 aboard being Gambian, the rescue highlights persistent outflows despite government promises of jobs and reform since the 2017 democratic transition from Yahya Jammeh's rule.
