IRGC strikes Kurdish targets; Iraq reopens airspace with Syria post-Israel-Iran tensions
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched strikes against Kurdish opposition headquarters in Iraq's Sulaymaniyah Governorate. Meanwhile, Iraq and Syria reopened their shared airspace following recent Israel-Iran military escalations, while a bus crash killed 21 people in Iraq.
Why it matters
Iran has repeatedly struck Iranian-Kurdish opposition bases in Iraqi Kurdistan, particularly since the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests, accusing them of fomenting unrest inside Iran. Such strikes violate Iraqi sovereignty and strain Baghdad-Tehran relations, while testing a 2023 security agreement under which Iraq pledged to disarm or relocate these groups from the border zone.
