Morocco is a constitutional monarchy in which King Mohammed VI retains substantial executive and religious authority while a parliament and prime minister (currently Aziz Akhannouch, of the National Rally of Independents) manage day-to-day governance. A pivotal Maghreb and Atlantic power, it maintains close ties with the EU, France, and the United States, and normalized relations with Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords, which coincided with U.S. recognition of its claim over Western Sahara. Its central and enduring rivalry is with neighboring Algeria, with which it has closed land borders and severed diplomatic ties, largely over the disputed Western Sahara territory. Lingering disputes with Spain over the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, alongside migration management, also shape its external relations.
