The Marshall Islands is a small Pacific archipelagic nation in Micronesia whose foreign and security policy is closely tied to the United States through a Compact of Free Association, which provides economic assistance and grants the US authority over defense in exchange for strategic access. It is a parliamentary democracy in which the legislature (the Nitijela) selects the President, currently Hilda Heine, who serves as both head of state and head of government. The country is a vocal advocate on climate change, given the existential threat rising sea levels pose to its low-lying atolls, and it remains one of the few states that diplomatically recognizes Taiwan rather than the People's Republic of China. Its location makes it a focal point of US-China strategic competition across the broader Pacific.
